Description

Develop technical assistance to ensure deaf, hard-of- hearing, and deaf-blind individuals have equal access in the civil, criminal and juvenile justice systems.


Intended Outcomes

  • Increased client access to attorneys.
  • Increased client access to communication in justice settings, through auxiliary services—interpreters, and CART providers.
  • Increased client access to communication in justice settings, through auxiliary aids—technology based; e.g., videophones, CapTel captioned phones, flashing lights for warning systems, audio induction loop systems, etc.
  • Outcomes improved for clients, including more appropriate placement outcomes such as mental health facility versus a jail for individual access to the justice system.
  • Better informed justice system personnel including law enforcement, dispatch, court systems, and Department of Corrections.

Intended Goal

The goal is to improve technical assistance for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people through the collaborative efforts of the different entities involved with the EAJS work group. The area of focus is effective communication access for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals involved with the justice system.
